(Uli Seit for The New York Times)Andy Roddick and Lindsay Davenport both had tricky matches Friday night but only one fell victim to the service “yips.”Roddick’s service games were surprisingly vulnerable against the agile Latvian Ernests Gulbis in the first two sets, but the American was able to shore up his formidable strengths in time to celebrate his (and Gulbis’s) birthday with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 7-5 win. It was Davenport who double faulted three consecutive times in one game in the second set of her loss to Marion Bartoli of France, 6-1, 7-6 (3). The crowd was staunchly behind Roddick the entire way, often chanting “Andy Roddick” the way Yankee fans serenade Derek Jeter in the Bronx.But what impressed me the most was the heart that Andy showed in battling back from being down a set and a break in the second to turn back a fearless up-and-coming player who has the talent to be in the top ten within the next year or two.
